Risalah

Visibly tired after an 11-hour flight from Cairo, Egypt, Dr Jemilah could not hide her exasperation at the bloodshed in Gaza.

“You get children with bullet holes in their chest and their head, it is not self-defence, it is targeted killing,” she fumed.

More than 800 have been killed in the Gaza conflict, up to 40% of whom were women and children. Over 3,000 have been wounded in the crossfire.

Worse, she stressed, is the state of the medical system of Gaza, which is on the verge of collapse.

“It really breaks my heart to see how the Palestinian doctors have been working non-stop for more than 14 days. They are completely exhausted and are on the verge of collapse. If that happens, the whole medical system of Gaza will break down,” she said, adding that the problem has been exacerbated by the Israeli attacks on medical personnel and ambulances.

Dr Jemilah urged the Foreign Affairs Ministry to negotiate with Egypt’s Foreign Ministry to speed up permission for Malaysian doctors to enter Gaza.

“About 20 doctors are on standby in Malaysia and many more are waiting at the border. We hope the ministry can help convince the Egyptian government that we are going into Gaza on a humanitarian mission,” she said.

To date, Mercy Malaysia’s Palestine Relief Fund has garnered RM5.35mil, thanks to the generous contributions of the public and corporate donors. Mercy Malaysia has earmarked the funds for immediate needs.

However, she hoped Malaysians will continue to donate to the Palestine Relief Fund.
